Everybody knows, a little place like Kokomo

Friday the 13th, and I am once again hanging out at the airport, awaiting my flight to:

Well, actually, I'm headed to Grand Cayman (where the words "Cayman Islands" are in the picture above). A better view of where I'm going is below right, though I do like the open vastness of one above...

Notes from so far today:

  • wonders of wonders, Laura Ingoldsby was on-time and ready-to-go, when her pick up happened ;
  • the check-in line for Spirit, and security was not terrible (it was barely long); and
  • Heather and I realized about an hour before our flight that we were both seated in the same seat (8A). When we approached a Spirit employee at a nearby gate to assist us (the wasn't one at our gate), and let him know, he responded with "Welcome to Spirit", and then got things solved.
And now, Laura, Heather, Jami and I are hanging out in the terminal, await our boarding (nice 3 hour check-in for international flights)...

Aruba, Jamaica...
Bermuda, Bahama...
Key Largo, Montego...

Daylight licked me into shape, I must've been asleep for days

I continue making my way through The Blind Assassin, and as such,

  • and because I stayed up way to late last night (I went to bed around 2 a.m.)
  • and because I head off to Grand Cayman on Friday and have prep work to do (I did find my passport)
  • and because I'm going to miss the Cure in concert on Friday night (so I won't get to hear if they play today's song)
  • and because, more importantly, I'll be missing Eddie Izzard performing Friday and Saturday in Miami (dagnabit!)
I will be brief today, and leave you with a quote from my book. Enjoy...
(I also have Meet the Spartans to watch, as well as some more stuff to do on Wikipedia...)

"Now he's on the windowsill outside, now he's in the room. The flowers of the chestnut tree flare up: by their white light she can see his face, the skin greyish, half-toned; two-dimensional, like a photograph, but smudged. There's a smell of burning bacon. He isn't looking at her, not at her exactly; it's as if she is her own shadow and he's looking at that. At where her eyes would be if her shadow could see."
-The Blind Assassin, p.468

"Show me, show me, show me how you do that trick
The one that makes me scream," she said
"The one that makes me laugh," she said
And threw her arms around my neck

Remember: listen as your day unfolds

Today was a day where Des'ree's You Gotta Be seems an apt description. I just kinda did today (which seems a good thing for 06-07-08).

I swam (early!) this morning, then hung out at the pool for a wee bit through the later workout (there's 2 practices--7 and 9--on Saturday morning). Then, after grabbing some breakfast, I took a nap and read The Blind Assassin, instead of watching Volver--I've actually been attempting to watch the film for most of the week, and haven't gotten to it (maybe tomorrow?). Toward the end of the afternoon, I went to see Kung Fu Panda with a friend, and then had dinner and read some more. Terribly exciting, I know.

It's probably for the best that this weekend not be too eventful, as the next 3 are occupied: next weekend I'm off to Grand Cayman for a 1-mile swim (assuming I find where I've inadvertently misplaced stashed my passport), then helping at a swim meet, and then swimming in a meet (which I need to enter...). On the plus side, last night at practice, I got to do some long course 100s on 1:20, which was cathartic as well as a good place on which to build on.

A man makes a car, and builds a road to run them on

Well, I am back from California. The trip went fairly well, other than a wee bit hectic.

My week since returning on Monday afternoon has been a little crazy, as well. And today my new car is now 2 weeks old: I've gone about 370 miles, and haven't gotten gas yet (though I will probably get some tomorrow--the tank is a bit low).

Oh, and in honor of my car being 2 weeks old, I had my first official South Florida driver experience: a car behind me decided I was apparently missing too many chances to cross 3 lanes of busy traffic from a side street, just to hover out in the middle waiting for traffic to open in the other direction. So what did she do? (yes, emphasis on the "she" part for today) Why, she decided to pull up next to me, into the lane for the other direction of traffic and go at the same time as me (actually trying to go before me). Wasn't that nice? (Black Nissan Altima owners, she was making you look bad.)

Even better: she stayed with me for the next 5-10 minutes, as traffic and further lights didn't allow her to get anywhere away from me. That made me feel better.

And these are the days when our work has come asunder
And these are the days when we look for something other

I'm going to California...

Another early morning trip to the airport. This time I'm headed to California for the weekend for work, and unlike last week, I've actually made it to my gate before my flight. Now this may be due to the fact that I took a cab to the airport, or it could be because I was able to leave for the airport an 1:45 before my flight, instead of 1:15.... There is also the nice and (ridiculously) early time: scheduling a cab pick-up for 4:30 a.m. is such fun (but at least there wasn't any traffic).

And today looks to be a long day. I fly out of Fort Lauderdale at 6:15 a.m. (4 a.m. wake up: yeah), and finish up with classes tonight at 10 p.m. Factor in the 3 hour time change (adding 3 hours) and that means a 4 a.m.-1 a.m. day: fun. Maybe I'll be able to catch a nap on one of the plane flights...

Have a good weekend.
